Villa Pupa

Villa Pupa in Varenna, Lake Como, Italy. Villa rental on Lake Como.

Villa Pupa in Varenna, Lake Como, Italy. Villa rental on Lake Como. Villa Pupa combines the two elements most seek on the lake - that of views of the lake, and a pool! Pools are the most unusual aspect and Pupa has a particularly interesting one, and with views that would rival those in Amalfi...and that's no small boast. But alas, we are getting ahead of ourselves.

Pupa is located on the property of a castle, where the owners reside and on a parcel of land that includes a large garden planted with roses and olive trees...all told encompassing some 60 acres. So you have loads of land, views, pool and space enough for 15 with all the space utilized (mansards with self contained apartments). As we have already divulged, this place easily has one of the most panoramic positions on all of Lake Como. Overlooking the three branches of the lake including views of Bellagio. I mean can you beat this view? Of course not. Here's another shot of that pool.

Note: The housekeeper's family live in an independent apartment in the basement of the property. While at the back of the house there is a part where the family of the owner lives when in residence. 500 meters from the villa, there is a clay tennis court managed by a local club.

What Guests Have To Say

Perched way up above the lake with wonderful views from the pool, and other spots on this big property. It is a big property. I think the family owns the entire hilltop. You can walk to their small but tasty restaurant on the property. Very handy when you don't want to cook or go down the hill.

A Little on the Region
Lake Como is the most famous and the most scenic. It's also the most difficult to get around in. Roads are narrow and winding, the traffic is slow and at weekends, a little too crowded which means the best way to get around is by ferry. Lake Orta and Maggiore are just as beautiful and easier to deal with because of the lake road for Como is, shall we say in Italian, dificile...at least mostly in the summer. Come to the lake district for its scenery, history, monuments, nature and gastronomic tradition. Swimming in the lake is possible, although this is not the main reason to go to this region. I would wear tennis shoes too. Pupa sits above Varenna, the small village that acts as the car/ferry gateway between the East side of the lake, Bellagio and the West. The east road will take you down to Como. Cross over from Varenna to Bellagio to Mennagio, going north along the left shore it's just a short drive to Cernobbio, whose old town features a delightful collection of picturesque houses and narrow alleys. This is the site of the fictional Villa Balbianello, the elegant family-home-cum-pensione featured in the film "A Month by the Lake." Nearby is one of the grandest hotels in all Europe, the Villa D'Este, whose rooms are almost like museum galleries and whose grounds boast Italy's only "floating swimming pool" Up the road is Toriggia, where you can visit Villa Passalacqua, a late 18th-century home where Vincenzo Bellini once stayed. like the asparagus from Rogano are grown. As you travel north you'll see Como's only island, Isola Comacina (St. John's Day, the week end after June 24th is celebrated with a mass in the ruins of the S. Eufemia basilica, followed by a costumed procession and night-time fireworks). Lake Como is renowned for its exquisite villas, and probably the most famous one is Villa Carlotta, a perfect combination of luxurious interiors (beautiful stuccos, lovely ceiling frescoes and a great art collection, including an Eros and Psyche by Antonio Canova) and luxuriant exteriors (over 500 species of plants, trees and shrubs from all over the world). Tremezzo is another lovely lakeside town. There's a classic lakeside promenade, as well as many wonderful old villas (some of which have been converted to hotels), and it's from here you can take a car ferry over to Bellaggio, on the opposite shore. 500 meters from the villa, there is a clay tennis court managed by a local club.
