Italian villa on lake como. Villa Pognana vacation rental on Lake Como, Lombardia, Italy

Italian villa on lake como. Villa Pognana vacation rental on Lake Como, Lombardia, Italy. Villa Pognana is a large Como villa designed in a country style that resembles the American Victorian era, with incredible views and the privacy most seek when renting a house on Lake Como. It is positioned on a hill watching the lake below and above the small lake town of Villa Pognana (many small stone steps up from the rental) where the rental is located. Pognana is a tiny shore village with a post office, alimentari and cafe. It hovers in a state of arrested development, circa 1940's. Your little step back in time.

Villa Pognana is not a "deluxe" rental, but its location, garden, views space and antique furnishings along with price - which we think is exceptional - makes this a good catch for a party of eight. Please note: to access the villa one needs to descend a stone stair of about 200 meters to the front gate. For this reason we would not recommend the rental for those with difficulty in mobility, or mind carrying their bags the distance.

Perfect for: family or couples.

The Details:

Villa Pognana features: Villa Pognana consists on 3 floors: it is a nice recently restored romantic accommodation, its interior reflects the atmosphere of an ancient holiday country house, and sends you back to a time when everything was more simple and life's rhythms more poetic. The furnishings are comfortable with some nice antiques. The sitting room and dining room walls are painted in soft apricot. The floor is antique: red, grey and white hexagonal tiles, typical for the area. On the upper floor, well-polished wooden floors gleam.
Ground floor: Sitting room, fully equipped kitchen (with dishwasher, washing machine), dining room with fireplace, there is a mezzanine with a bathroom.

First floor: Two double bedrooms (with lake view), upstairs at the second mid floor you have an other bathroom.

Second floor: two double bedrooms (lake view).

Downstairs: there is a typical grotto (as the house is built on rocks)

Outside: This is one of the highlights of this rental. The many terraces give you amazing views and a perfect place to dine al fresco. There is also a vegetable garden. August would be a good time for that.

Please note: To reach the villa, you will need to park your car on the road above and walk down an approx. 200 m path with flights of steps. The lake is then a further 100 m down the path (therefore not suitable for elderly guests or those with walking problems). Vittorio, the caretaker helps with the luggage.

A Little on the Region
Tre Rose in Nesso (approx 5 km towards Bellagio). The Bar San Remo in Bellagio near the ferry is good too. Great atmosphere. The car ferry is a wonderful way of getting about Como shores. Before leaving Como, be sure to take the funivia up to Brunate for a truly spectacular view. From Como, going north along the left shore it's just a short drive to Cernobbio, whose old town features a delightful collection of picturesque houses and narrow alleys. This is the site of the fictional Villa Balbianello, the elegant family-home-cum-pensione featured in the film "A Month by the Lake." Nearby is one of the grandest hotels in all Europe, the Villa D'Este, whose rooms are almost like museum galleries and whose grounds boast Italy's only "floating swimming pool" Up the road is Toriggia, where you can visit Villa Passalacqua, a late 18th-century home where Vincenzo Bellini once stayed. like the asparagus from Rogano are grown. As you travel north you'll see Como's only island, Isola Comacina (St. John's Day, the week end after June 24th is celebrated with a mass in the ruins of the S. Eufemia basilica, followed by a costumed procession and night-time fireworks). Lake Como is renowned for its exquisite villas, and probably the most famous one is Villa Carlotta, a perfect combination of luxurious interiors (beautiful stuccos, lovely ceiling frescoes and a great art collection, including an Eros and Psyche by Antonio Canova) and luxuriant exteriors (over 500 species of plants, trees and shrubs from all over the world). Tremezzo is another lovely lakeside town.
