A Little on the Region
Called the Poet's Gulf as this is the area where Lord Byron and Percy Shelly and wife Mary once called their home. Byron was crazy about Italy (early 1800's) and the trio, along with assorted other cast members, had their moments of debauchery so it is said in this cheery seaside area. Maybe the area has some alchemy for writing and sex, as they put out some historic stuff, Byron is known for Don Juan, Mary Shelly for Frankenstein and Percy for cooking. Pasta mostly. And what area is the Poets Gulf? Well, it's not Cinque Terre where the numbered groups of circumferentially challenged Germans and English fight over right of way on the "Path of Love" (which you now need a ticket for). It is the peninsulas south of Cinque Terre that kiss the sea. Villages such as Portovenere, Montemarcello, Tellaro, Le Grazie and Lerici among others. The big dot on the map here is La Spezia. Water taxis abound, seafood too. Percy Shelly drowned off of Lerici during a stormy night returning from Leghorn (Livorno).
